Making the most of your life through your work

Work life balances?

On average, we spend approximately 35% percent of our waking hours in the workplace (conscious mind minus the sleep), meaning approximately 35% of our time from the age of 18 to 60 or 65 years, we are with other individuals that are not our direct family (spouses, children, siblings and relatives). 

Professor Michael Aamodt (industrial and organisational psychology professor at Radford University) wrote this very relevant point, “With the possible exception of sleeping, people spend more time at their jobs than at any other activity in life… If a person is unhappy at work for 8 hours a day, the residual effects of this unhappiness will affect the quality of that person’s family and leisure life as well”.

Off course, it differs according to the jobs we do or the position level we are at. Presumably, at least at one point, the higher we are in our position, the percentage of waking hours in the workplace will be higher. I am sure that the figure mentioned is an eye popping percentage considering that it is the time spent with strangers (well, at least initially) and with people who probably we will leave behind when we change our workplace.

Whatever perspective we may have, one thing stands out, we need to make the best of that time not only in making a good income but also to make a meaning out of it. How do we do the latter, as the former depends on so many factors? One way that I have found to be useful is by having a good relationship with as many co-workers as possible. Changing the job given to make it more interesting and colourful is also effective, as it gave me the drive to be at the workplace with a zest. Lastly, I constantly remind myself and tune in my thoughts to make the job or task I am doing has meaning and affect others positively.

Researchers refer all the above approaches or processes as Job Crafting. Reflect and plan your next course of action in making your waking hours in the office not only productive but meaningful to the organisation you work for and your own inner self. That way, you will make the most of your life through your work.
